The Conference in Context

First launched over a decade ago, IEEE i-COSTE brings together researchers, engineers, industry professionals, and students to advance sustainable engineering practices worldwide. Supported by the IEEE Systems Council and a consortium of international academic institutions, the 2025 edition continued this legacy under the theme "Sustainable Technology for Humanity."

Held under this theme, IEEE i-COSTE 2025 emphasized the transformative role of technology in addressing critical issues such as climate change, sustainable development, resource limitations, social well-being, and the digital divide. Participants from multiple continents engaged in keynote addresses, technical sessions, tutorials, and panel discussions covering a wide range of interdisciplinary topics.

Research Topics and Technical Sessions

The three-day event featured keynote addresses by renowned experts, tutorials, and technical sessions covering a wide range of topics including sustainable systems, green computing, renewable energy, smart cities, sustainable manufacturing, and more.

The technical programme was structured across multiple face-to-face and virtual sessions, spanning:

  • AI, Computer Vision and Robotics
  • Sustainable Energy, Environment and Green Mobility
  • Explainable AI for Clinical Decision-Making
  • Cybersecurity, Trust, Policy and AI Regulation
  • IoT, Cloud Computing and Smart Automation
  • Computer Vision, Face Recognition and Digital Forensics
  • Digital Transformation, Society and Cultural Innovation

Research papers presented covered topics including photovoltaic panel optimization for urban energy solutions, solid-state and sodium-ion batteries in e-mobility, natural fibre reinforced composites for wind turbines, multi-strategy ensemble learning for malware detection, hybrid intrusion detection using explainable AI, AI regulation frameworks across the EU, US, UK and China, and women-led social entrepreneurship in fostering the UN Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting the breadth and ambition of the conference's interdisciplinary scope.

Organizing Committee

IEEE i-COSTE 2025 was led by a distinguished international committee with WUST faculty at the helm:

Leadership

General Chair: Prof. Touhid Bhuiyan, Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST), USA.

General Co-Chairs included Prof. Akhtar Kalam of Victoria University, Australia; Prof. Aman Maung Than Oo of Macquarie University, Australia; Prof. M Rafiuddin Ahmed of The University of the South Pacific, Fiji; and Professor Aiguo Patrick Hu of Auckland University, New Zealand. The Technical Program Chair was Prof. Sanjeevikumar Padmanaban of the University of South-Eastern Norway.

Additional committee roles included Finance Chair Kunal Kumar of Charles Sturt University, Australia; Publication Chair Jashnil Kumar of Fiji National University; and Woman in Engineering Chair Dr. Zakia Afroz of CSIRO, Australia.

Prof. Touhid Bhuiyan's role as General Chair of IEEE i-COSTE 2025 is a testament to the caliber of WUST's faculty and the university's growing standing in the global IEEE research community. Prof. Bhuiyan is a leading expert in Cyber Security and Professor at the School of IT at WUST, with research spanning cyber security, intelligent recommendations, social networks, trust management, big data analytics, e-Health, and e-Learning, cited by over 2,360 researchers globally.

Supporting Institutions

Global Consortium

IEEE i-COSTE 2025 was hosted and sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT), CQUniversity Australia, Massey University New Zealand, and NPS Australia. This international consortium of sponsors and supporting institutions reflects the global credibility and reach of the conference series, and the significance of WUST's selection as the 2025 host venue.

Publication and Open Access

IEEE Digital Library + SCIE/Scopus Journals

All accepted and presented papers were included in the IEEE-indexed Digital Library. In addition, top-ranked full papers were considered for publication in prestigious SCIE- and Scopus-indexed journals including IEEE Systems Journal, Energies, Sustainability, International Journal of Intelligent Systems, and others.

This dual-pathway publication model, immediate IEEE Digital Library indexing plus potential journal publication in top-ranked outlets, provided presenting authors with exceptional scholarly visibility and a strong return on their research investment.

Inclusivity and Global Access

WUST and the i-COSTE organizing committee built meaningful accessibility into the conference framework. Scholarships were available for students to support travel and participation, and discounted registration rates were offered for delegates from UN-designated least developed countries, reinforcing the conference's commitment to inclusivity and global knowledge sharing.

This commitment to equitable access reflects values that WUST holds at its institutional core: that knowledge and scholarship must be available to every learner, regardless of circumstance, a principle that runs through everything from WUST's tuition philosophy to its participation in global events like IEEE i-COSTE 2025.

IEEE i-COSTE 2025 and WUST's Research Mission

By hosting IEEE i-COSTE 2025, WUST reaffirmed its dedication to advancing sustainable engineering solutions and nurturing international collaboration. The conference provided a dynamic environment for exchanging ideas, inspiring innovation, and building partnerships that contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.

For WUST, IEEE i-COSTE 2025 was the most high-profile single conference event of 2025, a direct IEEE-backed endorsement of the university's infrastructure, faculty, and research community. It demonstrated that a focused, mission-driven institution in Alexandria, Virginia can stand alongside the world's leading technical universities as a legitimate and valued host of premier international IEEE scholarship.
