Research Integrity and Assurance

Upholding the Highest Standards of Scholarly and Academic Honesty

At Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST), research integrity is not simply a policy, it is a foundational commitment that runs through every academic program, every scholarly publication, and every interaction between students, faculty, and the broader research community. WUST holds itself and all of its constituents to the highest standards of honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct in all research activities.

WUST dreams of becoming a hub of research excellence recognized globally for advancing knowledge, driving innovation, and contributing to societal development. That dream can only be realized on a foundation of integrity. Without it, no degree, no publication, and no discovery carries lasting value.

What Research Integrity Means at WUST

Research integrity at WUST encompasses the principles and practices that ensure all scholarly work is conducted with honesty, rigor, and accountability. It means that every study is designed and executed in accordance with accepted academic standards, that data is collected and reported accurately, that the contributions of others are properly acknowledged, and that the work presented as original is, in fact, original.

Affirmative Spirit

WUST's core values include an Affirmative Spirit, promoting integrity and harmonious work with pride and compassion, and this spirit extends directly into the research environment. Faculty members, students, academic advisors, and administrative staff all share equal responsibility for maintaining and sustaining a culture of integrity at WUST.

Our Commitment to Ethical Research Practice

The mission of the WUST Center for Research is to foster a vibrant research culture by empowering students, academics, and staff with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to excel in multidisciplinary research, and to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice by facilitating cutting-edge research, collaboration, and innovation.

This mission carries with it an unwavering ethical obligation. All research conducted under the auspices of WUST, whether by faculty, graduate students, or undergraduate researchers, must adhere to the following principles:

Honesty

Researchers must represent their work, methods, findings, and conclusions truthfully. Data must never be fabricated, falsified, or misrepresented in any form.

Transparency

All research processes must be documented with sufficient clarity and detail to allow for review, replication, and verification by the scholarly community.

Proper Attribution

The ideas, findings, and intellectual contributions of others must be accurately and appropriately cited. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.

Objectivity

Researchers must approach their work free from bias, personal interest, or conflicts of interest that could compromise the integrity of their findings.

Accountability

Every member of the WUST research community is personally responsible for the integrity of their own work and shares collective responsibility for the research environment.

Research Misconduct: Definition and Standards

WUST defines research misconduct as any intentional, knowing, or reckless departure from the accepted practices of the relevant research or scholarly community. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Fabrication , inventing data, results, or findings that were never observed or collected
  • Falsification , manipulating research materials, processes, or results in a way that misrepresents the actual findings
  • Plagiarism , appropriating another person's ideas, processes, results, words, or data without proper acknowledgment
  • Misrepresentation , providing false information in grant applications, publications, academic work, or research records
  • Failure to maintain records , deliberately or recklessly failing to document, preserve, or produce research records when required

Honest Error vs. Misconduct

It is important to note that honest error and differences of professional opinion do not constitute research misconduct. WUST recognizes that good-faith disagreements in the interpretation of data or methodological approaches are a natural part of scholarly inquiry. Misconduct is distinguished by intent, recklessness, and a significant departure from established professional standards.

Academic Integrity in the Classroom and Beyond

Research integrity at WUST extends beyond the laboratory and the published article. It applies equally to all academic coursework, assignments, dissertations, and professional activities undertaken by WUST students and faculty.

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with University policies and to know and observe all current policies, regulations, and procedures related to the program he or she is pursuing. Academic integrity is a core component of that responsibility.

Students at WUST are expected to:

  • Submit only their own original work unless collaboration has been explicitly authorized
  • Properly cite all sources used in research papers, projects, and presentations
  • Refrain from submitting the same work for credit in more than one course without prior faculty approval
  • Decline to assist others in any form of academic dishonesty
  • Report suspected violations through appropriate institutional channels

Faculty and staff are equally expected to model exemplary scholarly behavior, to create academic environments in which integrity is valued and protected, and to address suspected violations promptly and fairly.

Reporting and Review Process

WUST takes all allegations of research misconduct and academic dishonesty seriously. Any member of the WUST community, student, faculty, or staff, who has reasonable concern that research misconduct has occurred is encouraged to report that concern through the appropriate institutional channels.

Confidentiality and Protection

All reports will be treated with confidentiality to the extent permitted by institutional policy. WUST is committed to protecting individuals who report concerns in good faith from any form of retaliation. Allegations will be reviewed promptly and fairly, and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the University's established policies and procedures.

Where an investigation determines that misconduct has occurred, consequences may include academic penalties, dismissal from a program, or other disciplinary measures commensurate with the nature and severity of the violation.

Integrity as a Graduate Outcome

WUST's commitment to research integrity is directly tied to its broader educational mission. Among the core learning outcomes WUST instills in all graduates is Social Responsibility and Ethical Values, a commitment that does not end at the classroom door but extends into every professional environment a WUST graduate will enter.

We believe that the ethical researcher is the effective researcher. The scholar who works with integrity produces knowledge that can be trusted, built upon, and applied, knowledge that genuinely contributes to the advancement of society. This is the standard WUST holds for itself and for every member of its academic community.

Assurance of Quality in Research

WUST continuously works to strengthen the systems, resources, and support structures that uphold research quality and integrity across the institution. This includes:

  • Providing faculty and students with access to research guidance, writing support, and academic resources through the WUST Library and Writing Lab
  • Offering training and awareness programs on responsible research conduct and ethical scholarship
  • Maintaining clear and accessible policies that define expectations for all members of the research community
  • Reviewing and updating institutional research policies in alignment with accreditation standards and evolving best practices in higher education

WUST aspires to nurture global leaders in academia and industry through impactful research and innovation. That aspiration demands nothing less than the highest standard of integrity, in every study conducted, every paper published, and every student graduated.

Contact and Guidance

Students, faculty, or staff with questions about research integrity policies, responsible conduct of research, or concerns about potential violations are encouraged to contact the appropriate academic office or their designated academic advisor. WUST is committed to providing guidance and support to ensure that all members of its community can conduct their work with confidence and integrity.
